By We are proud to share that Professor Nicola Marzari, board member of the Quantum ESPRESSO Foundation, has been elected to the prestigious Cavendish Professorship of Physics at the University of Cambridge (UK).
Since its establishment in 1871, only nine distinguished scientists have held this title. The first was James Clerk Maxwell, followed by Lord Rayleigh, J.J. Thomson, Ernest Rutherford, Lawrence Bragg, Nevill Mott, Brian Pippard, Richard Friend, and now Nicola Marzari.
Professor Marzari earned his PhD in Physics from the University of Cambridge in 1996, and a Laurea in Physics from the University of Trieste (Italy). He currently holds the Chair of Theory and Simulation of Materials at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. He also serves as the Director of the National Centre for Computational Design and Discovery of Novel Materials, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation. In addition, he heads the Laboratory for Materials Simulations at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland) and holds an Excellence Chair at the University of Bremen, Germany.
He has unwaveringly supported the Quantum ESPRESSO project since its inception, contributing both scientifically and strategically. It was with his usual wit that he suggested the very name of the project during the return trip from a Quantum ESPRESSO School in China!
